Thirteen lucky for Dodgers, Ethier

Posted by admin on 30th June 2009

Andre Ethier is at it again. His two-run home run in the bottom of the 13th inning Monday gave the Dodgers a 4-2 victory over the red-hot Colorado Rockies.

It was Ethier’s fourth walk-off hit this season and his major-league leading seventh since 2007. Ethier came to the plate in the 13 th with Casey Blake on first base and sheepishly admitted that he had a slightly different plan on his mind. “I don’t think (manager) Joe (Torre) is going to be too happy to hear this, but I was thinking about maybe bunting Casey over just to get a guy at second base and avoid maybe a double-play ball,” Ethier said. “I have a tendency sometimes to hit into double plays.” He thought better of that idea and rose a 1-2 pitch just over the wall in right field for his 15th home run, 14 of which have come at home. Ethier is tied with the Cardinals’ Albert Pujols for the major-league lead in home runs at home.

Ervin Santana says he's ready to rejoin Angels' rotation

Posted by admin on 29th June 2009

Reporting from Phoenix — Ervin Santana declared himself fit to return to the rotation after giving up three hits, striking out seven and walking none Sunday night in a 3 1/3 -inning rehabilitation start in an Arizona Summer League game.

“It felt very, very good,” said Santana, sidelined since June 12 because of an inflamed triceps. “There’s no discomfort. I feel I’m ready to go.” Of the 45 pitches Santana threw against an Oakland Athletics rookie league team, 33 were strikes. His fastball was clocked from 91 to 93 mph. “I thought I would throw a little harder,” Santana said. “But my location was good and I had good command in and out.” General Manager Tony Reagins, who watched Santana pitch, said how the right-hander feels today will be just as important as how he threw Sunday night.

Sadowski a big hit in debut

Posted by admin on 29th June 2009

From this day forward, he must be known as The Big Sadowski. Ryan Sadowski is big. Go to page 450 of the Giants’ media guide – way in the back – and note the 26-year-old is 6-feet-4, with more than 400 minor-league innings plus one season off after shoulder surgery over seven years.

Now, as a major-leaguer, Sadowski is 1-0. He walked into Miller Park from the cornfield beyond center field, pitched six shutout innings, got his first big-league hit, took a fierce Ryan Braun liner off his leg, responded by getting a double play and shepherded the Giants to a much-needed 7-0 victory over the Brewers. You do not know Sadowski, but those who have played with him in the minors rave about him.

Warriors select Curry with seventh pick

Posted by admin on 26th June 2009

OAKLAND, Calif. — The Golden State Warriors don’t expect Stephen Curry to upstage Monta Ellis — not now anyway. They expect both high-octane guards to complement each other in coach Don Nelson’s up-tempo offensive scheme.

The Warriors selected Curry with the No. 7 pick in the NBA draft Thursday, adding a pure shooter to the mix for a youthful franchise committed to returning to the playoffs in the powerful Western Conference. “He’s a guy who’s going to fit in quite nicely with the style of play here,” said new Golden State general manager Larry Riley, who was pleasantly surprised Curry hadn’t already been chosen. “I was concerned at one time that we might not be able to get him. I thought he might go ahead of us but as the draft turned out, it came to our favor.” Riley had been closely tracking Curry for two years as someone the Warriors would like to draft. The 6-foot-3, 185-pound Davidson star and All-American led the nation in scoring at 28.6 points per game and will join a backcourt with Ellis and Stephen Jackson.

Sacramento Kings Draft: Team Wins With Tyreke Evans and Omri Casspi

Posted by admin on 26th June 2009

In last night’s NBA draft, the Kings had to hit it big. They went in holding the number four, 23, and 31 picks. For a team with the worst record in the league last year, they needed to get those picks right.

They went in holding the number four, 23, and 31 picks. For a team with the worst record in the league last year, they needed to get those picks right. As the night played out, the Kings did as well or better than anyone could have expected. With their number four pick they took Memphis guard Tyreke Evans. Evans shined in both of his pre-draft workouts with the team and it was commonly believed he would be the pick. Evans is a freakishly long and athletic player whose strength and ability to get to the rim set him apart from other players. He will immediately help the Kings playing alongside team leader Kevin Martin. The King’s biggest need entering the draft was at point guard. It remains to be seen if Evans will have what it takes to be a point guard in the NBA, but regardless, he was the best player available and the right pick for this team.

Lakers sell two draft picks with an eye on free agents

Posted by admin on 26th June 2009

With one eye toward free agency and another toward the bank, the Lakers sold two of their picks in Thursday’s NBA draft for a combined $4.5 million.

The Lakers sat out the first round for a second consecutive season, selling the 29th overall pick to the New York Knicks for $3 million. Then they sent the 42nd overall pick to the Miami Heat for $1.5 million. In both deals, the Lakers also received a 2011 second-round pick. All told, the Lakers are $6.2 million richer than they were before the draft, raking in $4.5 million while saving another $1.7 million that would have been guaranteed to the 29th pick over the next two seasons.

Clippers make Blake Griffin top pick in NBA draft

Posted by admin on 26th June 2009

Poor Blake Griffin. The biggest day of his life up to this point became a footnote.

On the day the entertainment world lost Michael Jackson and Farrah Fawcett and the NBA saw Shaq and LeBron James united by trade, Griffin became the No. 1 overall pick Thursday night in the NBA draft. Griffin, the much-heralded sophomore from Oklahoma, is the fourth straight player from the Big 12 selected in the draft’s first two picks.

Guerrero homers in Angels' 11-3 win

Posted by admin on 25th June 2009

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Vladimir Guerrero ended a 28-game home run drought and had three RBIs and Bobby Abreu drove in three runs with a homer and a double as the Los Angeles Angels beat the Colorado Rockies 11-3 on Wednesday night.

The Angels, trying to win three straight division titles for the first time in the franchise’s 49-year history, remained tied with Texas for the AL West lead after falling a season-worst 5 1/2 games off the pace on May 13. Joe Saunders (8-4) allowed a run and four hits in six-plus innings, including a solo homer to Garrett Atkins leading off the seventh. He struck out six and walked one and improved to 5-1 with a 2.70 ERA in eight interleague starts. Chone Figgins was 3 for 4 and scored four runs, helping hand the Rockies their second straight loss after a stretch where they won 17 of 18.

Padres hold off Mariners

Posted by admin on 24th June 2009

SEATTLE – Chad Gaudin’s brilliant performance was just inches from being derailed in the second inning.

He gave up three singles in a row to the heart of the Seattle Mariners’ lineup and walked .123 hitter Ronny Cedeno to force in a run. Then Ichiro Suzuki laced a ball up the right-field line that would have gone for extra bases and scored at least two more runs. The one problem for Suzuki: First base umpire Randy Marsh called the ball foul.
