Sharks coach Todd McLellan talked Sunday morning about how the return of injured forward Devin Setoguchi would give him different options going forward when it comes to line combinations.
Sunday night, McLellan unveiled one of those new options, moving rookie left wing Frazer McLaren — known more for fighting than a scoring touch — alongside Joe Pavelski and Manny Malhotra during the first period.
All McLaren did was come through with his first NHL goal to jump-start the San Jose offense in a 4-2 victory over the Vancouver Canucks.
“Against a good hockey team, that’s what you call a good, solid road win,” said defenseman Dan Boyle, whose power-play goal at 6:15 of the second period gave the Sharks a lead they were able to protect the rest of the way.
The Sharks, who were also bolstered by the return of defenseman Rob Blake, looked much improved over the team that was blown away in a 7-2 loss at home to Chicago and barely escaped with a 5-4 shootout victory in Edmonton.

With their top line sorely missing Ryan Smyth and their offense sagging, the Kings reverted to the hard-hitting defensive efforts that were so effective for them last season.
That, plus a performance by Jonathan Quick that improved as the tension increased, allowed the Kings to wring out a 2-1 shootout victory over the Chicago Blackhawks before an announced sellout crowd Saturday at Staples Center.
After making a season-high 32 saves in the first 65 minutes, Quick stopped a wrist shot by Jonathan Toews and a backhander by Patrick Kane in the shootout.
The Kings got shootout goals from Anze Kopitar and Jack Johnson — with the latter playing himself into strong contention for a spot on the U.S. Olympic team — to end a three-game home losing streak and send the Blackhawks back to Chicago with consecutive losses in Southern California after being shut out by the Ducks on Friday.

Most of the time Ducks coach Randy Carlyle has directed these three words at Ryan Whitney, but they might as well have been targeted toward the entire defense corps.
Shoot the puck.
Apparently the blue line has gotten the message.
The renewed emphasis on their defensemen getting more involved in the offense and putting pucks on the net has resulted in an average of 10.4 shots on goal for the Ducks in the past five games compared to just 6.6 shots in the first 19 contests.
Because of that, the production on the scoresheet has increased. Scott Niedermayer has two goals and two assists on the homestand, Whitney and James Wisniewski each has a goal and two assists and Nick Boynton got his first goal of the season.

Help for the shorthanded Warriors could be on the horizon.
Ronny Turiaf was cautiously optimistic Wednesday that his left knee sprain is healing and is calling it day to day.
The day before, coach Don Nelson said he thought Andris Biedrins, who will have his back and groin re-evaluated Monday, could join the eight-man rotation before Turiaf.
Turiaf, however, had a good rehab workout before Wednesday’s game. He’s cautious because he’s made similar progress at times since he was injured Oct. 30, but has backtracked the following day – feeling pain both inside and outside the knee.

It is the one deal the Angels simply can’t avoid this offseason, the one acquisition that never has been more obvious than it is today.
We’re talking, of course, about the signing of Gary Matthews Jr.
No, not again, but the first time, which, much like the undying TV career of Tim McCarver, has turned out to be more than enough for everyone.
Painfully more.
No matter what the Angels do or don’t do during the next two months, Matthews and the $23 million they still owe him will keep getting in the way. With each passing day, his signing becomes more and more a case of subtraction through addition.
By winning the 2002 World Series, former General Manager Bill Stoneman left a legacy with the Angels. By acquiring Matthews, he left an odor.

Some results in college football are shocking. Their dramatic, unexpected flash imprints on our brains like a photograph.
Other results resonate. Their unfolding draws a meaningful line dividing a before and after.
When Stanford beat USC 24-23 in 2007, it was shocking. The Cardinal were a 41-point underdog playing their backup quarterback in a venue, the LA Coliseum, where USC, college football’s most feared program, had won 35 games in a row.
It flashed and everyone gawked. And then Stanford went on to finish 4-8 and USC went on to win the Rose Bowl and finish ranked No. 3 in the nation.
Boom! Then business as usual.
