The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim have been one of the most consistent franchises in all of baseball over the past decade. After undergoing a bit of a roster overhaul this winter, many counted Mike Scioscia’s out of the AL West race. Two weeks into the season, the doubters looked smart, as the Angels struggled mightily out of the gate. Since then, the Angels have gotten back on track as they have climbed above .500 after 15 games. While the club did lose franchise icon Vladimir Guerrero, the parting seems like a good decision for both parties. Guerrero is a shell of his former self as he now hits for limited power and his unable to play in the field due to a bad knee. The Angels replaced Guerrero with reigning World Series MVP, Hideki Matsui, who has been a good fit into the Angels lineup. Matsui is a good, professional hitter who excels at working the count and feasting on pitchers mistakes. While Matsui has been good, the Angels have to be worried about former top prospect Brandon Wood, who has yet to figure out how to hit big league pitching. Wood was once thought to be a perennial contender for the batting title, but has struggled to hit in several stints at the major league level.

Ervin Santana will start the Angels’ third game of the season tonight against Minnesota, following Jered Weaver and Joe Saunders.
It’s a fitting trio of pitchers to open the season — all of them having been mentored in a way by departed ace John Lackey.
“It’s totally different (than a few years ago) when John had to lead three young guys,” said Weaver. “For me, Saunders and Santana, he set a tone. Now we all know what it’s like. We all know what a playoff atmosphere is like. There’s nobody holding anybody’s hands anymore.”
The Angels stuck with their first night batting order.
Jeff Mathis was behind the plate again, having earned the lead spot at catcher over slugger Mike Napoli with his defensive skills. It didn’t hurt that his first at-bat of the season was a home run Monday. He hit safely again Tuesday.

It is the one deal the Angels simply can’t avoid this offseason, the one acquisition that never has been more obvious than it is today.
We’re talking, of course, about the signing of Gary Matthews Jr.
No, not again, but the first time, which, much like the undying TV career of Tim McCarver, has turned out to be more than enough for everyone.
Painfully more.
No matter what the Angels do or don’t do during the next two months, Matthews and the $23 million they still owe him will keep getting in the way. With each passing day, his signing becomes more and more a case of subtraction through addition.
By winning the 2002 World Series, former General Manager Bill Stoneman left a legacy with the Angels. By acquiring Matthews, he left an odor.

The Clippers, most notably Blake Griffin, are a little banged up on the eve of their exhibition opener, but that’s hardly unusual.
There was an injury to their No. 1 draft pick before training camp started, and, once the official practices started, there was one to the oldest player on the roster and another to the backup point guard.
Bring it on.
The games, that is.
The Clippers are familiar with this sort of thing, of course. They can only try to keep it under control, hoping the injury damage is confined to the preseason.
They will play their first game in nearly six months — their regular-season finale was back on April 15 — Sunday night at Golden State against the Warriors, at 6 p.m.
There was summer league in Las Vegas, in July, but that mainly featured an anonymous cast and the Clippers’ kids, No. 1 draft pick Blake Griffin and the three rookies last season, Eric Gordon, DeAndre Jordan and Mike Taylor (waived shortly thereafter).
Griffin, who injured his left knee four days before camp opened, will not play against the Warriors but could be cleared for contact in practice in a few days. Also sitting out will be backup point guard Sebastian Telfair, who was acquired in a four-player deal with Minnesota in July. Telfair injured his left foot during a drill at camp.

They clinch fifth division championship in six years with 11-0 rout of Texas, then start the celebration — but only after an emotional remembrance of the late Nick Adenhart.
The champagne-and-beer showers, the ear-thumping hip-hop music and dancing, the victory cigars — all the trappings of a traditional division-winning celebration would have to wait.
Before the revelry came a remembrance.
The Angels clinched their fifth American League West title in six years with an 11-0 romp over the Texas Rangers in Angel Stadium on Monday night, and after a huge group hug in the middle of the infield, players and coaches quickly retreated to the clubhouse.

Even though his club’s magic number to clinch the American League West is just six with nearly two weeks left in the regular season, Angels manager Mike Scioscia still isn’t quite ready to talk about the postseason.
Scioscia simply won’t talk about potential postseason matchups or his possible postseason rotation until the day his team officially clinches a division title for the fifth time in six years.
“We’re not popping the champagne yet,” Scioscia said. “We’ve got to get there, and we’ve got our work cut out for us to reach our first goal. Right now, we have tough games all the way through, so we have to keep focused on where we’re going.”

When it comes to defense, Torii Hunter speaks with a certain authority. Eight consecutive Rawlings Gold Glove Awards provide that, as does an errorless streak spanning 264 regular-season games, dating back to Aug. 31, 2007.
When Hunter — the club’s unofficial captain — exhorts his Angels teammates to tighten the screws, straighten up and fly right, you assume they’ll respond.
“As a team, us, we need to play a lot better,” Hunter said as the Angels were preparing for a three-game American League West showdown against Texas at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington. “We need to play the game we know how to play.
“Don’t try to do too much. Don’t get caught up in the hype. Just play the game. We’ve been making mistakes that aren’t like us. We’ll clean it up. We’re going to be better.”

Andre Ethier has been winning games all year with his bat. On Tuesday night, he won a game with his eye and saved one with his glove.
Ethier drew a tiebreaking bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the seventh inning, then made a game-saving catch crashing into the right-center fence in the top of the eighth as the Dodgers edged the D-backs, 4-3.
A second effective start by Vicente Padilla was undermined when the bullpen let a 3-1 lead get away. But the Dodgers broke the tie when Ethier worked his walk on a 3-1 pitch from lefty Clay Zavada after a walk to pinch-hitter Juan Pierre, a double by Rafael Furcal and an intentional walk to Matt Kemp, who homered for the Dodgers’ first run and created their third with his baserunning. Kemp has homered in his past four games.
