Let’s Get That Average Up

Posted by David on 19th May 2010

It is no secret that Adrian Gonzalez is the most feared hitter on the San Diego Padres. On a team full of youth, Gonzalez is a slugger who is still in his 20’s. Nearing 100 RBI’s the past three seasons, Gonzalez looks as if he will keep up with that pace this season. But a hole in his game, which haunts other sluggers such as Ryan Howard is the idea of average. After clinching a .304 batting average in 2006, it has gone downhill for Gonzalez. In 2009, it dipped down to .277, which is not terrible at all for someone with the power hitting that Gonzalez possesses.

However, 2010 has not been kind to Gonzalez in terms of batting average. His average so far is at .254, which would be exceptionally lower than it has been in years if the season were to end today. Yes, it is still very early in the season. But, Gonzalez may need to make adjustments at the plate to keep that average up. The Padres have a nice young group, but they will come and go with Gonzalez. And if Gonzalez is only getting one hit every four at-bats, Gonzalez may be thinking of ways to improve his swing as he watches the playoffs on television.
