Although he is Golden State’s best player, it may be in the best interest of the Warriors to trade star player Monta Ellis. Ellis is a solidified all-star, but there are two reasons why he should be traded. The first is that he is very injury prone. He has only played a combined 89 games over the past two seasons. The other reason is that he could possibly be stopping the development of Stephen Curry. Curry had a phenomenal rookie year, averaging 17.5 points per contest.

But both Ellis and Curry truly strive from running the offense. While either can play both PG and SG, both excel when handling the ball. It would be an injustice to either one to not have the ball in their hands. So if Ellis was dealt, then it would be Curry’s team to run.

Either way, Golden State is in trouble due to the contracts that Biedrins and Maggette have. But trading Ellis would allow Curry to truly develop into the star that he can, and will be.

NBA Rookie of the Year would be a nice honor for Stephen Curry, if he manages to beat out Sacramento’s splendid Tyreke Evans.

Much more important is the fact that the Warriors took a bit of a flyer on Curry and he wildly exceeded expectations. Whatever the Warriors do for next season – new owner, new coach, new home city, roster overhaul – it all has to revolve around their waif-like point guard.

Curry and Evans figure to fight their who’s-best fight for another decade or so, and Rookie of the Year is only one small step. Magic Johnson and Larry Bird fought a similar duel in 1979-80, two instant legends, and I don’t even remember who won the award, even though I witnessed every minute Johnson played that season.

I don’t care enough to look it up; their deeds that season outshine any trophy.

Monta Ellis scored 37 points and converted two free throws with 2.3 seconds left, and the Warriors rallied from an early 18-point deficit to hand the Celtics just their second two-game losing streak this season with a 103-99 victory Monday night.

“It was a wonderful game for us,” coach Don Nelson said. “Wins are hard to find anyway, especially against two quality teams in a row.”

Anthony Randolph added 18 points and nine rebounds and scored six straight during an 8-2 run late in the third quarter to put the Warriors ahead. C.J. Watson had six of his career-high seven steals in the second quarter, matching the Warriors’ record for a quarter, and also contributed 11 points and seven assists.

Ronny Turiaf was cautiously optimistic Wednesday that his left knee sprain is healing and is calling it day to day.

The day before, coach Don Nelson said he thought Andris Biedrins, who will have his back and groin re-evaluated Monday, could join the eight-man rotation before Turiaf.

Turiaf, however, had a good rehab workout before Wednesday’s game. He’s cautious because he’s made similar progress at times since he was injured Oct. 30, but has backtracked the following day – feeling pain both inside and outside the knee.

“He’s probably the greatest shooter I’ve ever coached,” coach Don Nelson said. “And I’ve had some good ones, but no one like Morrow. You’ve got to know where he is at all times.”

Morrow took seven shots in 22 minutes, making three, during Wednesday’s season-opening home loss to Houston. One of them was a 3-pointer in the final seconds, but his game-tying attempt over two defenders was off the mark.

Part of the reason he missed the last-second shot was that he had no rhythm. He had just checked in after sitting for most of the fourth quarter. When he was on the court, he averaged one shot every three minutes of playing time.

Curry had nine assists, five points (2-for-10 shooting) and five steals in the Warriors’ 108-101 win over the Los Angeles Clippers on Sunday at Oracle Arena. But the encouraging performance at point guard by Curry was overshadowed by the news that Wright will indeed need shoulder surgery.

An MRI of Wright’s left shoulder confirmed damage to the capsule— the cartilage ring that surrounds the socket. The timetable for his return will be set after surgery, which is not yet scheduled.

“I’m not going to speculate on whether the season’s lost,” Wright said, “or how long I’m going to be gone or whatever. I’m just focused on doing the rehab, working hard and coming back even stronger.”

Curry impressed those in the Warriors locker room with his court presence. He handled the ball comfortably, controlled the tempo, found the open man and fed the hot shooters.

“Anybody who’s going to play with Curry is going to be a beneficiary of a lot of open looks,” Nelson said. “That’s why I can’t keep him and Monta off the court together.”

Curry even managed to make a mark on defense.

“I work just as hard on the defensive end as I do on the offensive end,” he said. “Being in the right position is where I’m going to be the most effective. (ellipses) I’m trying to be everywhere pretty much on defense. A lock down defender? They might not call me that. But I’ll be a great help defender.”

The Warriors selected Curry with the No. 7 pick in the NBA draft Thursday, adding a pure shooter to the mix for a youthful franchise committed to returning to the playoffs in the powerful Western Conference. “He’s a guy who’s going to fit in quite nicely with the style of play here,” said new Golden State general manager Larry Riley, who was pleasantly surprised Curry hadn’t already been chosen. “I was concerned at one time that we might not be able to get him. I thought he might go ahead of us but as the draft turned out, it came to our favor.” Riley had been closely tracking Curry for two years as someone the Warriors would like to draft. The 6-foot-3, 185-pound Davidson star and All-American led the nation in scoring at 28.6 points per game and will join a backcourt with Ellis and Stephen Jackson.
