I am just wondering how one person’s mistakes can cause an entire school to get punished so severely. Usually punishments should fit the crime. Eye for an eye, that sort of thing. If I understand it correctly, the NCAA is punishing USC for incidents that took place several years ago. It appears as if Pete Carroll and Reggie Bush are both shocked at the punishments because they DON’T fit the crime. I believe USC is being made an example of at the expense of the next wave of high school seniors and college kids and not of the players and coaches who were involved. Basically, it has caused untold consequences and collateral damage for tomorrow’s players. What judge would think is fair?

California starting forward Omondi Amoke has been suspended indefinitely by coach Mike Montgomery for a violation of team rules, a blow for the eighth-seeded Golden Bears heading into their NCAA opener against No. 7 Louisville on Friday in Jacksonville, Fla.
The school provided no further details about what the 6-foot-7 sophomore did to be suspended. Cal is coming off its first Pac-10 regular-season title in 50 years.
Amoke moved into the starting lineup late in the season and had started 14 games total. He was averaging 4.8 points and 4.6 rebounds.

Sure, Temple was playing its first bowl game in 30 years, but what about those Bruins from UCLA? They were playing in the school’s first cold-weather, East Coast bowl on a field so icy it caused the coaches to change the game plan at halftime.
Wearing those soft blue and gold hues that don’t look right in subfreezing weather, UCLA rallied from a two-touchdown, first-half deficit Tuesday to spoil the new bowl kids’ day, beating Temple 30-21 in the EagleBank Bowl.
“I know they were saying the West Coast Cali boys were going to be soft and used to surfing and things like that,” linebacker Reggie Carter said. “I’m not going to lie; it was cold. But football is football, the field is still 100 yards long and we still played. They ran the ball; we stuffed it. We got the victory, so hopefully they can never say we’re soft. We were down 21-7, and you never seen us quit.”
Akeem Ayers returned an interception 2 yards for a go-ahead touchdown in the fourth quarter and UCLA’s defense allowed Temple to complete only one pass in the second half. The Bruins (7-6), completing their second season under coach Rick Neuheisel, finished with a winning record for the first time since 2006.

Some results in college football are shocking. Their dramatic, unexpected flash imprints on our brains like a photograph.
Other results resonate. Their unfolding draws a meaningful line dividing a before and after.
When Stanford beat USC 24-23 in 2007, it was shocking. The Cardinal were a 41-point underdog playing their backup quarterback in a venue, the LA Coliseum, where USC, college football’s most feared program, had won 35 games in a row.
It flashed and everyone gawked. And then Stanford went on to finish 4-8 and USC went on to win the Rose Bowl and finish ranked No. 3 in the nation.
Boom! Then business as usual.

USC tailback Stafon Johnson, who is recovering from throat surgery necessitated by a weightlifting accident, is expected to be released from the hospital Wednesday, the school announced.
Johnson was injured Sept. 28 when a bar carrying 275 pounds slipped from his hand and fell on his throat.
“There is still a process for all of the recovery of all the intricacies here, but he’s going to be out and about and all of that, so we’re thrilled for him,” Coach Pete Carroll said at his weekly newsconference.
When the sixth-ranked Trojans play at No. 25 Notre Dame on Saturday the Trojans will wear stickers on their helmets that read “STA FIGHT ON” over the number 13.

Southern California dropped nine spots and out of the top 10 in The Associated Press college football poll Sunday, and Washington moved into the rankings for the first time in six years.
A day after the Huskies upset the Trojans 16-13 on a late field goal, USC fell from No. 3 to No. 12 in the media poll. The Trojans became the second preseason top-five team to lose in the first three weeks of the season. Preseason No. 3 Oklahoma lost its opener to BYU.
Washington, ranked for the first time since Sept. 28, 2003, is No. 24.

Kansas State plays at UCLA on Saturday, and there is convincing evidence to suggest the Wildcats and Bruins are headed for a defensive battle.
Last week notwithstanding, this is a relatively foreign feeling for the Wildcats. K-State’s offense produced all kinds of yards and points the past two seasons, but never quite as many as its defense allowed.
Through two games this season, the script has been flipped.
“It’s kind of frustrating,” quarterback Carson Coffman said. “I felt horrible after the (Louisiana) game for the defense. They played so hard, and we kind of let them down.”

California conducted an hour-and-a-half scrimmage during its training camp workout at Memorial Stadium on Tuesday as the Golden Bears ran through a series of potential game situations during the session.
All five touchdowns in the scrimmage were scored on passes by either Kevin Riley was (8-16, 134 yards, 2 TDs) or Brock Mansion (14-21, 132 yards, 3 TDs). Riley found Jarrett Spikes for a 30-yard score and hit Jeremy Ross from 15 yards out. Mansion hooked up with Covaughn DeBoskie-Johnson on a 13-yarder that was the first score of the scrimmage and capped an 11-play, 80-yard drive that was the longest of the day. Mansion later hooked up with Will Kapp from 19 yards away and Charles Satchell with a 20-yard scoring strike.
