As the NFL season reaches it’s mid-point we can look at the teams from the great state of California and analyze what they’ve done so far and speculate how the rest of their seasons will shape up. Odds are that the the 49ers are going to be the team of California.
49ers
One of the most promising and favored teams to win it all, going by the NFL Spread, at the start of the 2012 season, the San Francisco 49ers have one best overall defensive units in the with a strong front composed of pro bowl defensive lineman and ageless wonder Justin Smith. Along with Smith two All-Pro middle linebackers in NaVorro Bowman and Patrick Willis. The offense is led by once thought to be bust quarter back Alex Smith now flourishing under the tutelage of head coach and ex NFL quarterback Jim Harbaugh, and workhorse running back Frank Gore. The second half of the season looks to be favorable as the 49ers take on mostly NFC West rivals, en route to what will likely be a trip for the second year in a row to the playoffs.
Chargers
Moving over the to the AFC West the 4-4 San Diego Chargers have a shaky grasp on 2nd place. After a Monday night debacle which saw the Chargers blow a 24 point lead against division rival Denver I n which quarterback Phillip Rivers threw 5 interceptions, coupled with a lowly loss to the Browns 7-6 where they were unable to get into the end zone. These losses put head coach Norv Turner on the hot seat which was cooled for the time being as they whooped the Kansas City Chiefs 31-13. If Rivers can keep the turnovers to a minimum and the defense continues to play stout and force turnovers there is reason why the Chargers shouldn’t be able to challenge the favored Broncos to win the AFC West and make some noise in the playoffs.
Raiders
The Oakland Raiders also of the AFC West have been coming on strong as of late after getting off to a 1-3 start they have been able to win two of their last four losing to only the currently and only undefeated team, Atlanta Falcons by a field goal. If it were not an outstanding effort by Tampa Bay rookie sensation Doug Martin racking up 251 rushing yards in what turned out to be an offensive shootout the Raiders would be in great shape. Not be over looked is the play of quarterback Carson Palmer who has been able to find talented receivers Denarius Moore and Darrius Heyward-Bey early and often to give the Raiders a feared passing attack which they will need in order to make up for the loss of their main rushing threat Darren McFadden. With favorable matchups in the second half of their season it is more than possible to see the Oakland Raiders clinch a Wild Card birth.

If there were any doubts about the type of offense Mike Singletary and the 49ers will run this season, they were swept away – no, stomped away – Thursday evening.
Fearing the offensive tackle they coveted and badly needed would be stolen in front of them, the 49ers traded up two places to snag Anthony Davis, a 323-pound junior tackle from Rutgers. Six picks later, they added even more beef to their offensive line with 331-pound Idaho guard Mike Iupati.
That’s 654 pounds of power-blocking offensive linemen added in less than an hour. Davis will line up at right tackle and Iupati at left guard, the position he played with the Vandals. Singletary cautioned that both players might not start in Week 1 – Davis is one of the youngest players in the draft at age 20 – but he made it clear he expected both to start at some point this season.

The San Francisco 49ers are playing some of their best defensive football of the past decade, and it’s just about the entire unit that’s doing it.
The team is getting contributions from every area on a defence that has climbed to No. 6 this week in the NFL rankings and been largely responsible for a 3-1 start that has the first-place 49ers in command of the NFC West.
San Francisco recorded its first shutout in 119 games with last week’s 35-0 rout of the St. Louis Rams, the latest testament to how well the unit is grasping defensive co-ordinator Greg Manusky’s 3-4 scheme.
“After you’ve been around a system for a while, you know exactly what to expect from your other guys and what to expect from me calling the plays,” Manusky said yesterday. “That is a comfort level for everybody. They understand where everybody’s supposed to fit, where everybody’s supposed to be, and they’re flying around doing good things and playing hard, playing physical and playing fast.”
Fragile Fred ailing again

San Francisco 49ers running back Frank Gore is expected to miss three weeks because of a right ankle strain.
The 49ers said Monday night that the strain was revealed during an MRI.
Gore injured the ankle on his only carry during Sunday’s 27-24 loss to the Minnesota Vikings. He left the game after a four-yard gain and did not return.
Gore was taken to the locker room on a cart, but X-rays revealed no broken bones.
The team says the injury is not related to the ankle sprain Gore sustained during his 207-yard rushing performance against the Seattle Seahawks on Sept. 20.

Frank Gore needed a friendly ear after his poor season-opening outing, so he called up offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye in the middle of the night.
“He just wanted somebody to hug, rub and lie to him,” Raye said. “He was feeling bad. He wanted to know if he was missing some holes. Like what most great runners do, he felt bad that he didn’t have the kind of opening day performance that he had anticipated.”
That moment, at 2 a.m. last Monday morning, is when Raye realized Week 2 would be much different for San Francisco’s star running back.
Gore’s spectacular afternoon single-handedly re-established the 49ers’ run game.

San Francisco 49ers Pro Bowl linebacker Patrick Willis was back Monday after missing 22 practices with an ankle and Achilles injury.
Willis, who suffered the injury during a drill, only participated in individual drills as the team’s trainers ease him in slowly. Willis said he wanted to return far sooner.
“If it was up to me, I would try to go the next day I hurt it,” Willis said. “But I didn’t want to let my pride and ego hurt the team.”

With the fourth practice session behind us, we’re slowly starting to get a couple of answers to our ever-mounting questions about the San Francisco 49ers, as both Head Coach Mike Singletary and Offensive Coordinator Jimmy Raye were in a talking mood on Monday afternoon.
Obviously the two most oft-asked questions so far have been (and will continue to be): 1) Who’s the starting quarterback? and 2) When will he get the chance to throw it to Michael Crabtree?
But for all the “Quarterback Controversy” mumbo jumbo, this morning practice was a jarring reminder that regardless of who winds up being the guy handing the ball off to him, running back Frank Gore remains the most important player on this offense and that as long as he’s upright and being fed a steady diet of carries, the 49ers have the potential to be an above average offense.

What a brilliant history – the Super Bowl championships, the Hall of Fame players, the unforgettable moments and this 2009 edition of the San Francisco 49ers wants to emulate it all.
But it’s not their own history the current crew wants to replicate – it’s the Dallas Cowboys of early the 1990’s that the 49ers want to become. From a desire to plant a new stadium outside of the team’s namesake to recreating the bludgeoning running game, San Francisco wants to be Dallas.
