“Just to be a part of it is special and it’s a great feeling right now,” Perry said, gold medal around the neck.

The Anaheim Ducks centre saw his first in-game action in six days on Sunday against the Edmonton Oilers, scoring two goals — including a beauty in the third period — and adding a pair of assists in the Ducks’ 7-3 win at Rexall Place.

His dominant performance boosted his season point total to 61 (17 goals, 44 assists) in 2009-10.

More important, for the time being at least, is that the Regina native still hopes to play with Team Canada at the Olympics in Vancouver, as it prepares for its opening game on Tuesday against Norway.

In a quiet moment as he left the Honda Center on Wednesday, Ryan Getzlaf said he has received more telephone calls in the past two days than he previously took in the past two months.

Such is the case when you have about 35 million people on edge from the moment you left the ice Monday night against the Kings.

Maybe every person in Canada isn’t fretting over Getzlaf’s sprained left ankle and his availability for next week’s Olympic men’s hockey tournament, but the immediate fate of the Ducks’ leading scorer has become a national story north of the border.

While he still wore a walking boot, Getzlaf hopes to skate in the Ducks practice Friday in Calgary and wants to be in the lineup Saturday when they play the Flames or Sunday in Edmonton.

“All signs are showing to things progressing the way we want them to,” said Getzlaf, who sat out the 3-2 win against the Oilers. “Obviously we have our fingers crossed if things keep going the same way and we don’t have any setbacks.

“When I woke up this morning, I was walking a lot better. I’m off the crutches and all that stuff. All those things point in the right direction.”

Click here to read the full article – By Orange County Register

How many players can have one major injury and come back to immediately score goals, and then suffer another lengthy setback and find the net the moment he’s back on the ice?

“Not many guys,” Ducks center Ryan Getzlaf said after a 3-0 Ducks victory over the Florida Panthers on a soggy Monday night at BankAtlantic Center. “He has great ability to find those areas and find the puck where he needs to.”

The Ducks (26-23-7) managed to save their longest trip of the season by winning consecutive times to evenly split the six games on the 13-day journey and stay within sight of the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference.

The big performers delivered as Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry finally broke through and Jonas Hiller celebrated his new $18 million contract extension by stopping 33 saves for his second shutout of the season and sixth of his career.

Click here to read the full article – By Orange County Register

As Ryan Getzlaf readied for the Ducks’ game against Phoenix at the Honda Center, his brother Chris was in Calgary playing receiver for the Saskatchewan Roughriders in the Grey Cup, the Canadian Football League championship.

n Anaheim, the Ducks took a second-period lead on a power-play goal by Getzlaf.

In Calgary, Chris Getzlaf caught two passes, and Saskatchewan had a 16-point fourth-quarter lead over Montreal.

But the Ducks gave up two goals in the third period, only to tie the score late and then lose in overtime, 3-2, when James Vandermeer’s one-timer from the slot deflected off a Ducks defenseman 1 minute 18 seconds into the extra period.

In the dressing room, Getzlaf learned his brother’s team had lost in even more excruciating fashion, falling to Montreal, 28-27, on a 33-yard field goal with no time left after a Saskatchewan penalty on a failed field-goal try gave Montreal a second chance.

Click here to read the full article – By Los Angeles Times

Apparently the blue line has gotten the message.

The renewed emphasis on their defensemen getting more involved in the offense and putting pucks on the net has resulted in an average of 10.4 shots on goal for the Ducks in the past five games compared to just 6.6 shots in the first 19 contests.

Because of that, the production on the scoresheet has increased. Scott Niedermayer has two goals and two assists on the homestand, Whitney and James Wisniewski each has a goal and two assists and Nick Boynton got his first goal of the season.

Click here to read the full article – By Orange County Register

The stench of a bad opening night loss to San Jose seemed to clear until the Minnesota Wild erased a three-goal, third-period deficit in stunning fashion and Andrew Brunette’s power-play goal in overtime capped the 4-3 comeback victory.

It meant the first goals scored by summer acquisitions Joffrey Lupul, Evgeny Artyukhin and Saku Koivu turned into mere footnotes.
“We didn’t play well enough to win,” Ducks coach Randy Carlyle said. “Simple as that. It’s a 60-minute game. We played 50 minutes.”
Brunette’s winner came after Ducks defenseman James Wisniewski took a retaliatory roughing penalty when he was clearly being goaded by Minnesota forward Kyle Brodziak.

Click here to read the full article – By Eric Stephens of Orange County Register

There’s no need to press the panic button after one game, but the Ducks might want to give the reset button a firm push.
A standing-room-only crowd of 17,281 showed up at Honda Center for the opener Saturday hoping for more moments of revelry at the expense of the rival San Jose Sharks, the team their heroes bounced from the Stanley Cup playoffs in the first round last season.
Instead, the Ducks were serenaded with boos from a frustrated faithful that started heading for the exits at the second intermission. The 4-1 loss to San Jose was that ugly and that one-sided.

So how did Ducks coach Randy Carlyle spend his early hours Sunday? He put in the videotape, jumped on his stationary bike and dissected the carnage.
“I’ve had a little stress with my morning,” Carlyle quipped.
All joking aside, it might be the right time for the Ducks to leave the scene of Saturday’s crime as they fly out to begin a four-game trip that starts Tuesday in Minnesota and works its way to the East Coast.

Click here to read the full article – By Eric Stephens of Orange County Register

Ryan Getzlaf knows his life could be much more hectic.
It could take him much longer to get out of the locker room after every game or practice because of the media demands if he were playing in Toronto or Montreal.
Star players there are treated like the equivalent of the New York Yankees in New York, perhaps more. Their every move is monitored, their every word documented.
Picture Pittsburgh Penguins star Sidney Crosby or Washington’s Alexander Ovechkin playing in a hockey-intense market north of the border, and contrast it with the relative anonymity that cloaks Getzlaf.

“It’s been brought to my attention a lot of times how things go differently there with the media and the coverage,” Getzlaf said. “I’m thankful for it, in a way, when you’re out there flying under the radar a little bit more.”
The secret has long been out about Getzlaf. He’s an MVP candidate on par with the Crosbys and Ovechkins of the NHL. It’s just that he might not be the first name mentioned when the league’s superstars are evoked.
And that’s fine with the Ducks center, who is set to lead the club when it opens the season Saturday at the Honda Center against rival San Jose.

Click here to read the full article – By Curtis Zupke of Orange County Register

Niedermayer, who turned 36 in August, had the third-highest amount of ice time in the NHL last season at 2,207 minutes 49 seconds.
