Top line finally starts scoring

Posted by TheHockeyGuy on 6th October 2009

For the past two days, Todd McLellan looked as if he were about to do something dramatic to spark his team. Talked about it, too.
But in the end, the Sharks coach kept his top line intact with Joe Thornton, Dany Heatley and Devin Setoguchi all contributing to a convincing, penalty filled 4-1 victory over the Anaheim Ducks on Saturday night.

“We’ll keep the game plan in the locker room,” McLellan said when asked what his intent was in having rookie Benn Ferriero replace Setoguchi on the top line during the previous two practices.
Whatever. Even if that game plan was simply to send subtle messages to the players involved, it worked.

Rookie promoted to Sharks’ top line

Posted by TheHockeyGuy on 3rd October 2009

Sharks Coach Todd McLellan had a hard time finding something to like in his team’s dismal 5-2 opening-night loss in Colorado.
But he praised the play of rookie Benn Ferriero. And so when San Jose tries to rebound tonight against an Anaheim Ducks team that ousted it from the playoffs last spring, Ferriero will have a new pair of linemates:
Joe Thornton and Dany Heatley.

“I did like what we saw from Benn,” McLellan said Friday of the 5-foot-10, 185-pound newcomer who replaces Devin Setoguchi at right wing on what should be the team’s top line. “I didn’t so much like what we saw from the other three that were together, so we changed things a little bit.”
That wasn’t the only lineup adjustment. The Sharks also brought rookie left wing Frazer McLaren up from Worcester and sent Jamie McGinn in the opposite direction.

Frustrating opener for Sharks

Posted by TheHockeyGuy on 2nd October 2009

The names on the back of more than a half-dozen jerseys may have changed, but the Sharks brought their usual high expectations into the start of a new NHL season Thursday night.
Which is why the result — getting outplayed and out-hustled in a 5-2 loss to the Colorado Avalanche — may have been particularly troubling to San Jose coach Todd McLellan.

“The performance was disappointing, very disappointing,” McLellan said, singling out some of his top-end talent in particular. “We have some world-class athletes on our team, and they didn’t play like that.”
The Sharks’ top line of Joe Thornton, Dany Heatley and Devin Setoguchi was a combined minus-6. Defenseman Dan Boyle was a minus-2.

Sharks make Rob Blake their new captain

Posted by TheHockeyGuy on 1st October 2009

The regime change in the Sharks leadership structure was formalized Wednesday with the announcement that veteran defenseman Rob Blake will be the new captain, taking over for Patrick Marleau.
Coach Todd McLellan also named defenseman Dan Boyle and forward Joe Thornton as the assistant captains.

Blake, a longtime captain during two tours with the Los Angeles Kings, is a bit of a surprise because he is playing with a one-year contract. Also, Boyle was widely seen a potential captain after Sharks general manager Doug Wilson made the decision this summer to take the “C” away from Marleau.
“He just felt like a very comfortable choice,” McLellan said of Blake. “His teammates respect him to the highest standard. And I firmly believe that he and Danny Boyle have a lot to offer. They don’t have to stand back and be the respectful duo that they were last year.”
