The Mariners were the chic pick in the American League West, the focus of a Sports Illustrated spread because of their dynamic defense, a team to be reckoned with after acquiring Cliff Lee, Chone Figgins, Casey Kotchman and Milton Bradley.
The A’s reckoned with them, all right, and the scoreboard proved it. Capped by Thursday’s 6-2 victory, the A’s won three of four games, collected 40 hits to the Mariners’ 26 and overcame an Opening Night error-fest to open a season 3-1 for the first time since 2004.
“Can’t play too much better than this,” starter Brett Anderson said after scattering three hits and issuing one walk in six scoreless innings. “Can’t have a better team win.”

During his time as an ace right-hander for the A’s, Jim “Catfish” Hunter was known as someone who carried more than his share of the load.
Current A’s catcher Kurt Suzuki can certainly identify with that, and so Wednesday’s announcement that Suzuki was selected by his teammates and coaches as the recipient of the 2009 Jim “Catfish” Hunter Award seemed fitting.
Suzuki, who likely will lead American League catchers in games started for the second consecutive season, and Hunter, who twice threw more than 300 innings and eclipsed the 250-frame mark in six other seasons, would have made quite the battery.

The A’s will have plenty of question marks heading into Spring Training 2010, but there won’t be much uncertainty surrounding the constitution of their bullpen.
Heading into this week’s series against the Rangers — the second of three games is scheduled for Tuesday — Oakland’s relievers were sporting an American League-best 3.57 ERA, and every key member of the unit is expected back next season.
Even better for the cost-conscious club: They’ll return on the cheap.
All-Star closer Andrew Bailey, right-hander Brad Ziegler and left-hander Craig Breslow aren’t yet eligible for arbitration, and top setup man Michael Wuertz is a year from free agency.

Rajai Davis was noticeably disappointed in the clubhouse on Monday afternoon when he saw his name had been left out of the starting lineup.
Davis delivered a pinch-hit, two-run, walk-off triple, capping a three-run ninth to give the A’s a series-opening win over the Rangers, 3-2.
“It’s funny,” Davis said. “Things have a way of working themselves out. It worked out for our team, and it ended in heroic fashion.”
Davis’ game-winner extended his hitting streak to a career-high eight games. The game-ending triple was only the fourth in Oakland history and the first since Carney Lansford’s on Aug. 28, 1986.

With the A’s one out away from falling 17 games under .500 for the first time since 1997, things looked awfully bleak late Tuesday night.
Boston’s All-Star closer, Jonathan Papelbon, was on the mound with a runner at third and the Red Sox ahead by three runs. Due up: rookie first baseman Tommy Everidge, 0-for-4 to that point in his big league debut. Three batters later, the Fenway Faithful had gone from full-throated froth to flat-out flummoxed.

Rickey Henderson was brilliant. Oh, his acceptance speech during Sunday’s National Baseball Hall of Fame induction ceremonies was far from an oratorical masterpiece. In fact, it might not even be in the top 10 of the 38 inductions I’ve covered. But for Henderson, it was brilliant.
The world’s greatest leadoff hitter and stolen-base champ wowed the Cooperstown crowd — estimated at 21,000 — during a sometimes rainy afternoon when Jim Rice and the late Joe Gordon were also enshrined. For weeks leading up to the ceremony, the buzz around baseball was predicting what to expect from Henderson.

All-time stolen base king known for flair, colorful persona
Considered by many the greatest leadoff hitter in the game today, Ichiro Suzuki was in a playful mood earlier this month while holding court at the 80th All-Star Game in St. Louis. Asked for his thoughts on the impending Hall of Fame induction of Rickey Henderson, widely considered the greatest leadoff hitter of all time, Ichiro thought about it for a second or two and smiled.

Holliday’s slam ties it, Cust’s HR caps Oakland-record rally
Anything Justin Morneau can do, Matt Holliday can do better. Morneau hit two home runs — including a grand slam — and drove in a career-high seven in the first three innings as Minnesota built a 10-run lead. Game over. Or not. Holliday’s seventh-inning slam tied things up, then Jack Cust hit a solo shot to cap a seven-run inning as the A’s made one of the most improbable comebacks to knock off the Twins in Monday’s series opener, 14-13.
