49ers beef up offensive line in first round of draft

Posted by GameSetMatch on 23rd April 2010

If there were any doubts about the type of offense Mike Singletary and the 49ers will run this season, they were swept away – no, stomped away – Thursday evening.

Fearing the offensive tackle they coveted and badly needed would be stolen in front of them, the 49ers traded up two places to snag Anthony Davis, a 323-pound junior tackle from Rutgers. Six picks later, they added even more beef to their offensive line with 331-pound Idaho guard Mike Iupati.

That’s 654 pounds of power-blocking offensive linemen added in less than an hour. Davis will line up at right tackle and Iupati at left guard, the position he played with the Vandals. Singletary cautioned that both players might not start in Week 1 – Davis is one of the youngest players in the draft at age 20 – but he made it clear he expected both to start at some point this season.

Ali making rounds for charity group

Posted by GameSetMatch on 9th March 2010

Hall of Famers Willie Mays, Willie McCovey and Orlando Cepeda are regular visitors around the San Francisco Giants.

But when Muhammad Ali showed up in the clubhouse Tuesday to tout his Athletes for Hope charity campaign, players, coaches, clubbies and even the general manager and owner stood in line for photos with the 68-year-old former heavyweight champion.

“I thought he was going to react and give me a right hand in the chin,” catcher Bengie Molina said jokingly. “I was afraid.”

Right-hander Matt Cain put his pitching fist up to Ali’s left fist. Mays greeted Ali in an adjacent conference room before leaving the ballpark following the closed-door meeting.

“I know Ali,” Mays said afterward, refusing to speak further about their friendship.

Ali, who lives in Scottsdale, suffers from Parkinson’s disease. He rarely talks in public and speaks in a barely audible whisper.

Sources: Lincecum gets 2-year deal

Posted by GameSetMatch on 12th February 2010

Right-hander Tim Lincecum and the San Francisco Giants have settled their arbitration case, with the two-time NL Cy Young winner signing a $23 million, two-year contract ahead of Friday’s originally scheduled hearing, baseball sources tell ESPN The Magazine’s Buster Olney

For arbitration, the Giants filed for $8 million while Lincecum countered with $13 million. He earned $650,000 last season.

Lincecum, the reigning Cy Young winner, was 15-7 last season with a 2.48 ERA. He’s 40-17 in his three major league seasons with a 2.90 career ERA.

Niners suddenly ferocious

Posted by rsanrel on 9th October 2009

The San Francisco 49ers are playing some of their best defensive football of the past decade, and it’s just about the entire unit that’s doing it.

The team is getting contributions from every area on a defence that has climbed to No. 6 this week in the NFL rankings and been largely responsible for a 3-1 start that has the first-place 49ers in command of the NFC West.

San Francisco recorded its first shutout in 119 games with last week’s 35-0 rout of the St. Louis Rams, the latest testament to how well the unit is grasping defensive co-ordinator Greg Manusky’s 3-4 scheme.

“After you’ve been around a system for a while, you know exactly what to expect from your other guys and what to expect from me calling the plays,” Manusky said yesterday. “That is a comfort level for everybody. They understand where everybody’s supposed to fit, where everybody’s supposed to be, and they’re flying around doing good things and playing hard, playing physical and playing fast.”

Gore runs all day in 49ers’ win

Posted by GameSetMatch on 21st September 2009

Frank Gore needed a friendly ear after his poor season-opening outing, so he called up offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye in the middle of the night.

“He just wanted somebody to hug, rub and lie to him,” Raye said. “He was feeling bad. He wanted to know if he was missing some holes. Like what most great runners do, he felt bad that he didn’t have the kind of opening day performance that he had anticipated.”

That moment, at 2 a.m. last Monday morning, is when Raye realized Week 2 would be much different for San Francisco’s star running back.

Gore’s spectacular afternoon single-handedly re-established the 49ers’ run game.

Zito solid as Giants beat wild-card leading Rockies

Posted by GameSetMatch on 16th September 2009

Barry Zito is pitching a lot like his old self and the San Francisco Giants are finally backing him with plenty of runs. And they’re right back in the playoff chase.

Zito struck out a season-high nine in his biggest win yet as a Giant, Juan Uribe drove in three runs and San Francisco shaved another game off Colorado’s hold on the NL wild card with a 10-2 victory over the Rockies on Tuesday night.

“We’re just clicking right now,” manager Bruce Bochy said. “Hopefully this is something we can continue and keep the momentum going. … We still have some ground to make up.”

San Francisco won its third straight after a four-game skid and pulled within 2½ games of the wild-card leading Rockies, who dropped their fourth straight following an eight-game winning streak.

Report: Giants put in claim on Hoffman

Posted by GameSetMatch on 28th August 2009

The Giants reportedly are the team that put in a waiver claim on Brewers closer Trevor Hoffman this week, although the possibility of a trade remains remote.

An ESPN.com report Friday said the Giants made the claim, perhaps for their own, or perhaps to block the Dodgers and Rockies, their rivals in the NL West race, from claiming Hoffman themselves.

Major League executives are barred from discussing waivers, so Brewers general manager Doug Melvin has not commented on Hoffman’s situation.

49ers’ Willis returns to practice after battling injuries

Posted by GameSetMatch on 18th August 2009

San Francisco 49ers Pro Bowl linebacker Patrick Willis was back Monday after missing 22 practices with an ankle and Achilles injury.

Willis, who suffered the injury during a drill, only participated in individual drills as the team’s trainers ease him in slowly. Willis said he wanted to return far sooner.

“If it was up to me, I would try to go the next day I hurt it,” Willis said. “But I didn’t want to let my pride and ego hurt the team.”

This Just In: Frank Gore Is The Best Player On The 49ers' Offense

Posted by admin on 5th August 2009

With the fourth practice session behind us, we’re slowly starting to get a couple of answers to our ever-mounting questions about the San Francisco 49ers, as both Head Coach Mike Singletary and Offensive Coordinator Jimmy Raye were in a talking mood on Monday afternoon.

Obviously the two most oft-asked questions so far have been (and will continue to be): 1) Who’s the starting quarterback? and 2) When will he get the chance to throw it to Michael Crabtree?

But for all the “Quarterback Controversy” mumbo jumbo, this morning practice was a jarring reminder that regardless of who winds up being the guy handing the ball off to him, running back Frank Gore remains the most important player on this offense and that as long as he’s upright and being fed a steady diet of carries, the 49ers have the potential to be an above average offense.
